About us

Governance & transparency

The Black Bird Group is a non-governmental, non-profit organization. Our funding comes mainly from private donations and the company Black Bird Group Ltd, which is owned 100 % by the Think Tank association.

How we are organised

Black Bird Group is an umbrella brand shared by two separate legal persons. We all share a common mission to “Understand the unthinkable”, but the finances and day-to-day operations are separate.

Independence

No pre-publication review

No funder, partner or customer sees analysis before it is published, or has any say over its content.

Declared interests

Where a member of staff has an interest that could reasonably be read as a conflict, it is declared.

Separated activity

Public research is never presented as a commercial deliverable, and commercial work is never presented as independent research.

Sustainability and ethics

Our Sustainability and Ethics Policy sets out how we expect the organisation and everyone working in it to behave. We understand that studying defence and national security should strengthen democracy, not undermine it. This influences the choice of subjects we take on, the sources we rely on, the partners we work with, and the way we treat one another.

The policy covers our ethical conduct and the obligation to correct the record, which work we will and will not accept and who decides, equal treatment and the safety of staff and volunteers, and the environmental impact of how we operate.
